Stefano Spagnuolo • 2011

My name is Stefano Spagnuolo, I am in the IBO program at LaSalle Community Comprehensive High School.  One of the requirements to graduate from the IBO program was to do a personal project.  My goal was to do something that would benefit the community.

One of the first things that came to mind was to raise money for a special and important foundation.  The foundation I chose was the Sabrina & Camillo D'Alesio Foundation.   I choose this foundation for several reasons, one being that I love the work they do for families and children in need.  However, the main reason I have chosen the Sabrina & Camillo D'Alesio Foundation is that I have a connection with this family.  When I was a young kid, I attended St. Mary's Daycare with Sabrina and Camillo. We played together in the backyard, we went on the same fieldtrips and played with the same toys.  Therefore, when I had to choose what foundation to raise money for, I felt I had no other choice.

For my project, I put together a cookbook with recipes from family and friends.  I was able to sell 50 cookbooks and raise $600.00. This project was a lot of work, but it is also for a foundation that does a lot of work.

Viren’s First Birhthday Fundraising Party • 2011

It is remarkable how our children are able to drastically impact our lives; for the better of course. Funny how as adults, we quickly become accustom to sleepless nights, projectile vomit and crazy "terrible twos". Why do we then turnaround and say "I want kids"? We see it to be incredibly simple; seeing yourself in their eyes is the greatest gift life has to offer.

When it came time to celebrate our youngest son's 1st birthday, we reflected on how fortunate we were to have such beautiful healthy boys. Boys who test us everyday and inspire us to be better people for them and for the world we will leave them. My husband Nimesh and I decided to celebrate our son Viren's 1st birthday unconventionally by inviting our dearest family and friends to a grand birthday party in September of 2011. During the party, we took a few minutes to introduce everyone to Sabrina and Camillo, and tell their story. In lieu of gifts, we shared the Sabrina & Camillo D'Alesio Foundation mission and suggested donations to this wonderful cause. That night, along with our face painting, "Dancing Spiderman" and "Rigolo the Magician", a total of $995 was raised.

All the children had an amazing time and the parents of these children were reminded of how lucky they were. It was a great feeling for both my husband and I to know that our party not only entertained our guests, but gave our guests a chance to make a difference in the lives of other children and their families.

We look forward to our next opportunity to do it all over again!
